Well, the kids and I are still busy rallying our friends to help us help kids smile. This is another simple service project we’re doing to bring a little joy to the Youth Life Foundation of Durham. We’re collecting Spinbrush toothbrushes for the kids to help them take care of their teeth and smile a little brighter.
You might remember me introducing you to the Youth Life Foundation back in the spring, during our “Couponing For Good” campaign. It’s an organization that I support, not just because it’s a ministry of our church, but because the children they serve there are experiencing a childhood quite similar to my own. These great simple service projects have given me a chance to give a little something back and they have also given my children the opportunity to discover the power of helping others. Our goal is 25-30 toothbrushes for the kids in time for their annual backpack drive.
It’s so easy to take our access to oral care for granted. It’s an area I rarely thought about as a way we could support underprivileged, yet deserving kids. This was just one more way for me to remind my kids how blessed we really are. If they miss dental appointments, it’s because I don’t take them, not because I can’t. I think they were shocked to discover that there are kids who need toothbrushes—it’s just something they’ve always had access to and probably never thought twice about. They’ve been brushing (and watching us brush!) since they were small. Here’s a sweet picture I found of my little one flossing one day when he was barely a year :-).
Now, we’re still collecting our toothbrushes, so you can join in. Simply visit my Facebook event before the end of the month for details.
